Biblical Misconceptions – The Holy Spirit Acts 2:1-4
A Marvelous Event – Points To Consider • 1. “Getting the Holy Spirit” doesn’t involve events on this passage. • 2. The languages were understandable. • 3. A sensible “sermon” was delivered – no babbling. • 4. Speakers received H.S. – no one was admonished to “get the Holy Ghost.” • 5. No one told to “feel the Spirit come into your heart”. They were told v. 38. • 6. Spirit was a gift, not the source of more talk, i.e., how they felt when this happened.
Direct Operation of the H. S. in Conversion • Calvinist position. “Totally evil” people can’t respond to truth. God must “make” them. • Acts 16:14 – God “opened her heart.” • How? She “responded to the things spoken by Paul.” Read verse 15 • Every event of conversion have “teaching” from a person, Cornelius, Saul, etc. • How are we all “called”? 2 Thess. 2:13-14
The “Spectacle” • Not the miracles “confirming the word” – Heb. 2:1-2; 2 Cor. 12:12; but the miracle becoming the focus. • Explain Rom. 8:16; Acts 2:38; 5:32. • Never a sign of a personal salvation.
The Limit • I Cor. 13 – time wise: faith, hope and love remain. Prophesy, tongues and knowledge (miraculous) to cease. • When – when that which is perfect comes • At Second Coming – no more faith (2 Cor. 5:7), no more hope (Rom. 8:24) • Limit also as to prestige – God gets the glory. I Cor. 14:26-32.
