  3. Advantages • Data structured according to cataloging rules • Stability • Predictability • Centralized bibliographic data creation • Efficiency • Consistency • Ease of maintenance

  4. Advantages (cont’d) • Management of data left in expert’s hand • No extra training • No duplication of effort • Rules are not your enemy • Global management of resources • Long term thinking

  7. Where are we now? • Technical Services –> Resource Management • Access Librarian –> Web Architect • Library website completely restructured • Formal web oversight committee

  8. Challenges • Resource centered presentation (catalog) vs user centered presentation (web) • Data for searching (catalog) vs data for browsing (web) • Physical object arrangement vs digital object arrangement

  9. Challenges (cont’d) • Do we need to catalog for OPAC or for web display? • Do we need separate rules for cataloging and web presentation? • Do we need to replicate catalog on Web?

  10. CCC your partner … • Communicate • What elements are essential for cataloging • What elements are needed for web • Compromise • Know & accept your limitations • Work together to a common goal • Consider context

  11. Real life • Format • Format of current resource iteration (catalog) • Format of original (web) • Title • Proper title (catalog) • Made up title (web) • Chameleon nature of e-resources • Commitment to maintain data • Choice of record format • Transition mode

  12. Data Keepers’ Story of MEDLINE • Title proper is the key • Separation OR collocation • Separate records • ClusterMed • Ovid Medline • PubMed • Collocation via uniform title • MEDLINE

  13. Website Keepers’ Story of MEDLINE • “Popular” title is the key • Collocation AND separation • [info] ClusterMed • [info] MEDLINE • Access via ClusterMed • Access via Ovid • Access via PubMed • [info] Ovid MEDLINE • [info] PubMed

  14. Decisions, decisions… • Possible solutions • Create “dummy” record for MEDLINE • Adjust script for web display • Word of caution • Avoid creating exceptions • Avoid individualized treatment
