What Is Kurzweil 3000? “Kurzweil 3000™ is the comprehensive reading, writing and learning software solution for any struggling reader, including individuals with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, attention deficit disorder or those who are English Language Learners.” - Cambium Learning
What Can I Do with Kurzweil 3000? • Differentiated Instruction: multi-sensory allows learners to hear and see grammar and punctuation • Encourage fluency: readers start and stop at their own pace, re-read sections • Aids in self-correction: easy-to-use and access reference and correction tools • Encourage pre-reading with notes, highlighting & editing tools
Starting Kurzweil 3000 • Double-click the icon on the desktop (if available or to go to the Start menu > Programs > Kurzweil 3000 • Use your Malden Network log-in (first initial/last name) to log-in • “Tip of the Day” will show up on the screen, press the X on the tip window to close it
Adding Text To Kurzweil 3000 Place literature on a scanner, text side down, make sure scanner is connected to computer with Kurzweil on it, press the SCAN button in Kurzweil – voila! Kurzweil does all the work while you watch.
Adding Text to Kurzweil 3000 Open an existing file saved on your computer, either in your P: or U: drive or saved in another designated folder
Set Up Your Text • You can start reading right away by pressing the Read button at the top of the screen OR you can customize your reading experience in the Read menu at the top of the screen
Set Up your Text • Use the Tools menu at the top of the screen to change highlighting colors, add a bookmark or change the pronunciation of a word
Setting Up your Text • Change the voice, style, speed, magnification, and page number using the bar above the text
Adding More to your Text Add a bookmark, alphabetize bookmarks and find bookmarks in your text using the bookmark button in the smaller menu bar above the text
Supporting Comprehension • Add a print or voice note prompting readers, suggesting topical questions or reminding them to stay on task using the notes feature in the tool menu
Supporting Comprehension • Use the Synonym, Definition, Syllables and/or Spell buttons to support understanding of words in text • Highlight the word with your mouse, then press the button that matches your need
Supporting Comprehension • Select the most appropriate type of dictionary from the referencesection of the menu bar (even picture dictionaries)
Finished? • Add a bookmark • Don’t forget to save any changes you’ve made • Use a folder with a student’s name on it to keep that student’s work in the same place • Allow student to use text to work on writing assignments… • Take a deep breath. You did it – You mastered Kurzweil 3000!!!
