Divergent thinking is much more than creativity Creative Quotient indicates the extent to which a creative idea could be generated which has value (as in to its practicality and feasibility).
Divergent thinking is much more than just creativity However, Divergent Quotient includes all off-beat revolutionary ideas. These ideas may not necessarily be big ideas, but could also be small innovations in process or products but which has the potential to shake existing industry standards.
Example: A printer manufacturing company asks Two managers to find ways to improve its profitability • High ‘CQ’(Creative Quotient) manager comes up with 100 ideas on paper in one hour. All of them of value, but mostly includes the ideas already floating in the market. For instance, ‘cut costs’, process re-engineering, ‘hike distributor commissions’ and so on. • High ‘DQ’ manager comes with half of the ideas generated by high ‘CQ’ manager. But one of the ideas is truly revolutionary. He or she suggests getting full-fledged into 3-D printing business, which is the future of printing. His or her inputs have fully come from repository of existing ideas that are of value, but not revolutionary. Exhibits higher DQ to come up with a revolutionary or path-breaking idea.
