Security • Problem: some RETS servers allow access to too much data and the controls are not yet available • Let’s call it like it is • Features vary by vendor • Initial development effort $$ • You must do your homework • Define your requirements up front - policies & business rules Security is high-priority for all
Security • Manage access to data sets - roles / permissions • Can be tied to membership or separate application • Control who gains access to server • Login / Password required like FTP • User-Agent security can be required by application • Greater knowledge & skills required - RETS is more complex • Demand will drive improved solutions
Managing Database Changes • Coordinating changes is hard work • Easier with RETS due to metadata • Provide access to new metadata – “dress rehearsal” • Proactive notification > 30 days • Maintain e-mail list - data customers • Try it yourself – using RETS client Proactive communications are key
