  1. 5 Tips and Tricks for IELTS Listening Test

  2. IELTS Format The test has got four sections; listening, reading, writing and speaking and the candidates are evaluated on all these parameters and graded from 0 to 9. The speaking test is conducted separately whereas the other three are organised together. These grades are known as ‘bands’ and the average of the four sections is your overall IELTS band. Although the higher the better, the band required for various purposes, from studies to work differs from country to country and case to case.

  3. Listening Section • The listening section is the first section that is provided to a student when appearing for the IELTS test and consists of four audio sections that will be played from which you will need to answer ten questions each. There are forty questions which range from filling in the blanks to multiple-choice type and each carries one mark. There is no negative marking in case of a wrong answer. The total marks obtained by a candidate are then converted to a band score. For example, if you score 24, your listening band will be 6.

  4. 5 Tips for Listening • A lot of people search for various tips and tricks that will help them perform better in the Listening section. Our experienced IELTS coaches think that these are the five tips that you should take note of.

  5. 1. Time Management • You get to listen to the audios only once so it is critical that you manage your time well. While you get thirty seconds before the beginning of each section to look at the questions, you also get thirty seconds after the end of each section to correct any answers that you may have given. This second break of thirty seconds should be utilised to look at the questions of the next section since there are minute possibilities of you remembering the audio to correct any answers that you have already given.

  6. 2. Read the Instructions • Many students who are bright and can follow the conversation properly make the silly mistake of not reading the instructions carefully. You might have been asked the answer in ONE or TWO words ONLY and you might write more than that. This is an unforced error and should be strictly avoided.

  7. 3. Predict the Answers • Having a habit of reading is always a great skill. If you are well-read, then chances are that you will be able to predict the answers to some questions without even listening to the audio. With practice, even the non-readers can become pretty good at predicting the kind of answers that they need to look out for.

  8. 4. Note multiple questions at the same time • It does happen that in one of the sections, the speed of the speakers is fast and they give out two answers within a span of a few seconds. This is why you must always try to read and note two questions at a time. Highlight the keywords of the question and think of the synonyms that may be spoken instead and you are ready to take on the listening with ease.

  9. 5. Grammar makethman • Well, we are not talking about the Kingsmen movie, this is an English test and therefore grammar definitely maketh man. Spelling mistakes will cost you and your answer will be marked as wrong. So, be careful if it is weather or whether! Another thing that good grammar will help you with is in selecting the proper answer. If you read a ‘fill in the blank’ question carefully, you will find out if the ‘blank’ needs to be singular or plural. You can also guess the kind of answer that will fit or not fit. Therefore, grammar rules supreme! Master it.
