Tropical Climates • Found in areas near the Equator • Tropical Humid • - Warm and Plenty of Rain All Year • Some areas have wet and dry seasons due to monsoon winds • - India, Southeast Asia • Tropical Wet and Dry • - Just to the north and south of the Equator – also called Tropical Savanna • - Warm, but has rainfall seasonally due to the sun’s movement towards or away from these latitudes. • - Low pressure in the summer (wet), high in the winter (dry)

DryClimates • Arid • - Usually located at about 30 degrees north and south latitude • - winds move moisture away from these areas (toward the equator and toward the temperate zones) • - can be very hot, but also can reach low temperatures • Semi-Arid • - transition area between deserts and more humid areas • - grasslands, grain can be produced here

Middle Latitude Climates • Mediterranean • - Hot, dry summers and mild winters • - Around the Mediterranean Sea, and places like southern California • Humid Subtropical • - Moist air from warm ocean currents affects the eastern sides of continents • - Warm humid summers, mild winters • - Florida, China • Marine West Coast • - Usually on the west coasts of continents in the upper middle latitudes • - mild all year, but lots of rainfall possible • - Oregon and Washington • Humid Continental • - Found in the Interiors of continents • - Far from oceans. Lots of rain, lots of variation in temperatures • - Western Russia, Canada, northeastern USA.

  5. High Latitude and Highland Climates • Subarctic – located above 50 degrees north latitude, long cold winters, but can have evergreen forests. • Tundra – coastal areas in high latitude climates. Very cold winters, only small moss, grasses, and shrubs can grow. Ground is frozen a few feet below the surface – permafrost. • Ice Cap – In the polar regions. Covered by snow and ice year round. • Highland – Lots of variation in mountain areas due to different elevations. Ice at the peak, trees along the base and everything in between.
