Purpose • Why conduct this particular survey? • Provide practical experience to cement theoretical knowledge • Extend USM’s dataset from the I-10 bridge northward • GET A DEGREE!!! USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
History • Site Selection • Potential sites selected during Dave Dodd’s, Hydro Data Mngt Course • Upper Pearl (I-10 to SSC) • Lower Pearl (Hwy 90 to St. Joe’s Pass) • Bayou Caddy/St. Joe’s Pass • Upper Pearl selected for: • Complexity • Proximity to SSC • Data uses (USM, NAVO, SBT) USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
Survey Area I-10 SSC USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
Primary Survey Equipment • Equipment: • Bertram (EM3000 MB, Klein 3000 SSS, Seabird CTD, POS M/V) • USM Skiff (Knudsen 320MP single-beam, Marine Sonic SSS (150, 300 KHz), Digibar Pro (SVP), Trimble MS 860 (WAAS Enabled) • Positioning (Ashtech Z-Xtreme in PPK mode) • Tides (Sutron 8210 (2), OTT) • Ancillary (Bottom Grab, Secchi disk) USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
Existing Data • Imagery (Louisiana Atlas, MARIS) • MARIS data (rivers, roads, etc) • Census Data • Chart (11367, 32nd Ed, July 2003) USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
Preliminary Planning • Gathered existing data/Conducted interviews • Selected HIC, Party Chiefs and SME’s • Determined timelines and milestones • Two weeks of data collection, processing and presentation preps. • Determined data collection priorities • Soundings • ATONs • Contacts • Shoreline • Grabs and Secchi USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
Existing Control • Geodetic: USM1, Dead End • Tidal: I-10 (1960-1978 EPOCH) USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
Hydrographic Survey Specification USM2004-01 • Initially written during HYD608 • Group 2’s HSS selected as most complete, updated by group at the beginning of the survey. • Final HSS: USM2004-01 USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
HSS: Major Sections • Append 2: Tidal Data • 3 Tide Gauges (SBT Quaywall, Hancock Pier, I-10) • 30 days of data collected • Weekly observations • Reduce soundings to MLLW • Append 3: Wreck List • No known wrecks USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
HSS: Major Sections • Append 4: Geodetic Data • Data referred to NAD83 (equivalent to WGS84 for charting) • Landmarks referenced to NAVD88 • PPK positioning (Order 1 accuracy) • Append 8: Specific Charting Info. Requirements • All soundings, ATONS, and shoreline features will be delineated to Order 1 standards • All Landmarks within visual site of the river will be positioned • All Aids to Navigation will be located and described • Report discrepancies for Aids to Navigation to the local U.S. Coast Guard District (District 8) USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
HSS: Major Sections • Append 9: Oceanography • Sound Speed • CTD casts will be taken 3 X daily aboard the Bertram • SVP casts will be taken 3 X daily aboard the Skiff • SVP corrections will be applied onboard for Bertram and within CARIS for the skiff • Multibeam • 10 % overlap required • Single-beam • 25 m line spacing for development lines and 250m line spacing for cross-check lines • Ancillary data: Secchi and bottom grab data will be collected daily USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
Preparation Activities:Tides and Leveling Jennifer Wozencraft
Report of Survey • Modeled after template provided by Lcdr. Don Ventura, Royal Navy. • ROS broken into many sections. Sections written by the SME’s. • Written during and after data collection and processing. USM 2004 Upper Pearl Survey
