Matilda’s Abbey Known as Matilda's Abbey, and consecrated on 18 June 1066, it is thought to be the place where William the Conqueror's men gathered before they crossed to England. The tomb of Matilda of Flanders, William's wife, stands in the choir.
Battle Abbey Tradition has it that before the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William of Normandy vowed to build an abbey if he was victorious. The remains of the Benedictine Abbey still stand on the slopes of Senlac Ridge where Harold Godwinson fell.
