What is Figurative language? • Figurative language is when you describe something by comparing it to another thing/ or something else.
Alliteration • This is when there is a repetition of a single letter in the alphabet. • Example: "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickle peppers.” • Example: "She sells seashells by the seashore."
metaphor • Compares two unlike things.( Without using the words: like and as.) • Example: My brother is a peanut. (Your comparing your brother’s size to a peanut.) • Ex: My dog is a monster. (You are saying your dog is as ferocious as a monster.)
Simile • Compares two things using like or as. • Example: My brother is like a peanut. • Ex: My dog is like a monster. • Ex: Your eyes are as bright as the stars in the sky. • As you can see with the above examples. Things are being compared using (like) or (as).
Personification • Giving human characteristics to non-living things. • Ex: The sun smiled at me. (The sun is not human but we are saying that the brightness smiled at me.) • Ex: The painting screamed at me. • Ex: The sign jumped at me.
onomatopoeia • A single word, that sounds like the thing, it is referred to. • The glass clanked. • The water dripped. • The butterfly fluttered. • Clanked, dripped, and fluttered are all exampled of onomatopoeia.
Hyperbole • A great exaggeration used to emphasize a point, and is used for expressive or comic effect. A hyperbole is not to be taken literally. • Ex. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
Idiom • Idioms are groups of words whose meaning is different from the ordinary meaning of the words. • Ex. Put a lid on it! (This means to be quiet. It does not mean to actually put a lid on something.) • Ex: Zip it! (You are telling someone to keep a secret. You are not telling them to actually zip something up.)
