Believer’s Baptism • The Christian life is a new birth (John 3:3) • New Christians are like a baby (1 Peter 2:2) and are commanded to grow in grace (2 Peter 3:18) to maturity. • The first step of Christian growth is believer’s baptism (Matt. 28:18-20)
What is Believer’s Baptism? • Identification with Christ – a public testimony that one has accepted Christ as Savior (Matt. 10:32-33). • Water baptism is clearly a FIGURE or TYPE of something which already took place in the heart of the believer the moment was saved (1 Pet. 3:21). • Water baptism is the ordinance representing the identification of the Christian with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3-6).
Four Proclamations of Baptism • The believer's death, burial, and resurrection with Christ - Colossians 2:12. • the death of our old life to sin, and our resurrection to walk in newness of life - Romans 6:4. • Our faith in the Trinity of the Godhead - Matthew 28:19. • Our "putting on" of Christ - Galatians 3:26,27.
Why Should I be Baptized? • Because God commands it – Matt. 28:19-20 • Because my greatest example to follow was baptized – Matt. 3:13-16. • Because it was a normal practice of churches in the New Testament (Acts. 8:38, 9:17, 10:48, 16:15, 33; 18:8, 19:4-5) • Because it is a testimony of faith and you aligning your life with the Bible.
Who should be baptized? • “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized” (Acts 2:41). • Only those that believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God can be baptized (Acts 8:37-38). • There is no record of the baptism of any baby in the Bible.
How should a person be baptized? • Like Jesus was baptized (Matt 3:16) “He…went straightway out of the water.” Jesus was immersed. • Like New Testament believers were baptized (Acts 8:38) “they went down both into the water…and when they were come out of the water.”
When Should I be baptized? • In the New Testament, believers were baptized immediately (Acts 8:38-39; 16:31-33).
Conclusion • Baptism is not a “sacrament” that imparts saving grace but rather is an ORDINANCE. We are not saved by baptism, but by faith in Jesus Christ and His blood (I John 1:7). • Baptism is an outward symbol of what has already transpired in the heart of one who has trusted Jesus Christ for full salvation
