The Effects of Ethanol Production on the Hydrologic Cycle concerning the cases of two Aquifers: Ogallala and MahometBy: Christopher Longton
Introduction About corn and ethanol production The Mahomet Aquifer The Ogallala Aquifer Conclusion
About Corn • Water intensive • 22-23 inches annually • A 200-bushel corn crop uses about 600,000 gallons of water • nearly 3,000 gallons per bushel
About Ethanol • As a rule of thumb, water utilization is 10 gallons per minute for each 1 million gallons of yearly ethanol production. • Thus a typical 50 million gallons per year ethanol production facility would need 500 gallons per minute of water • ~720,000 gallons/ day
MAC • What is the MAC? • Mahomet Valley Water Authority (MVWA), • What sorts of mapping? • What are the demands on the aquifer?
Before depletion became a problem, it held more water than all of the freshwater lakes, streams, and rivers on Earth.
Conclusion • Corn is water intensive • Pressures on the aquifers • Why?
The question at hand seems to be one of priorities: Is less expensive energy more important then water? Apparently many people are choosing energy over water. I contend that the greater question is: Which can people survive without, energy or water?
