Transformer manufacturers in India & types of transformer. India is a vast country with a huge population but the transition of electricity from the urban to rural areas has been a long daunting journey. There has been tremendous growth in the power sector because India being a manufacturing giant relies on heavy electricity use for its stabilized and upcoming industries. Despite many ups and downs, the turmoil in power utilization is definitely stabilizing slowly. Since transformer was built, it has maintained a special place in the power sector. Being a static device, a transformer transforms power from one circuit to another without changing frequency. It operates on an AC supply following the principle of mutual induction.
Step Up Transformer and Step Down Transformer This type of transformer increases voltage from primary to secondary increasing the AC voltage supply and current is stepped down for reduced wire resistance. This is a step up transformer and when the opposite is done, it’s called a step down transformer. It is meant to step up and down the voltage level of power in transmission and distribution power system network.
Three Phase Transformer and Single PhaseTransformer To generate greater electric power, it is done in 3 phases at 11 kV or higher voltage. Three phase step up transformers play a vital role in current distribution at the sending end of the transmission line. A three phase transformer is somewhat compatible and occupies less floor space with just a single unit being connected instead of three.
Electrical transformer Whether it is electrical Power Transformer, Distribution Transformer or Instrument Transformer, power transformers are used in transmission network for stepping up or down the voltage level to handle peak loads and is efficient at near full load.
Two Winding Transformer and Auto Transformer A two winding transformer is applicable where the ratio between high voltage and low voltage is greater than 2 whereas in the latter one, the ratio between high voltage and low voltage is less than 2.
Oil Cooled and Dry Type Transformer Oil cooled transformers are basically large with fins wherein oil circulates keeping the unit cool. In dry transformer type, the unit is kept cool by a blower which circulates air around the cabin area. It is also called an air cooled transformer.
Power transformers: Now let’s have a look at power transformers in detail. Power transformers come in the high range of voltage transformers. They are extensively used in big industrial applications like factories and for heavy power equipments. Since low current does not give acceptable input to high consumption equipments as it results in greater line current and more line loses, a bigger transformer with higher input supply is viable. A power transformer starts from the range of 25 KVA and intakes greater voltage level to regular the electricity. When the voltage level of a power is increased, its current is reduced which causes reduction in ohmic or I2R losses in the system and reduction in cross sectional area of the conductor. Seemingly the voltage regulation is improved. To integrate low level power to a higher level, step up transformer for efficient electrical power transmission are installed at the sending side of the power network. This high voltage is further broken down into acceptable range to the households by stepping it down to the desired level at the receiving end with the help of step down transformer. Thus, electrical power transformers are vital in power transmission.
Distribution transformers: A lower version of power transformers, a distribution transformer normally has ratings less than 200 kVA, although some standards include units up to 5000 kVA. It is a transformer that is meant to provide a “step down” voltage used in the distribution line that transmits load to the end user. The final voltage transformation in the electric power distribution system is then ready for lower load consumption. Distribution transformers are also mounted on electricity poles and so called pole mount transformers. If the distribution wire is done underground or at ground level, then the same transformer can be mounted on concrete structure above ground level and secured in a steel cabin. They are pad-mount transformers. Usually a distribution unit don’t require full load to operate, maximum energy is saved when voltage regulation in these transformers is kept to a minimum. They reduce iron losses being energized for 24 hours a day even without load with maximum efficiency at 50% of full load. Hence they are designed to have small leakage reactance.
