  1. What do you know about DNA? DNA

  2. DNA and Protein Synthesis C – Recognise the structure of DNA and understand DNA’s role in protein synthesis. B – Understand the process of transcription A – Explain the translation process A* – Apply your understanding of the processes above to explain protein formation from a DNA template. Words – Transcription, translation, ribosome, polymer, polypeptide, protein.

  3. DNA Structure

  4. Transcription • The process of copying DNA into mRNA • Strand separation • Transcription using RNA polymerase enzyme • mRNA leaves the nucleus and enters the cytoplasm of the cell. http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/index_tj.asp?objID=AP1302 http://video.google.co.uk/videosearch?hl=en&q=dna+transcription&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=video_result_group&resnum=4&ct=title

  5. Translation • A Ribosome in the cytoplasm attaches to the mRNA stand • The Ribosome matches bases on tRNA molecules to the mRNA template in triplets • Each tRNA binds an amino acid and this is removed by the Ribosome • Each amino acid is attached to the next by the Ribosome producing a poly peptide which will form into a protein.

  6. Home work Use your class notes and what you have learned today or research the process of protein synthesis and create a cartoon strip of the stages. I would expect 4 – 8 annotated images explaining the process. http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/index_tj.asp?objID=AP1302 http://video.google.co.uk/videosearch?hl=en&q=dna+transcription&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=video_result_group&resnum=4&ct=title
