Light Bulb Evaluation • Objective: Develop an experiment that will evaluate different technologies of light bulbs for common household lighting • Lesson module is designed to enlighten students and help them become more educated energy consumers in our society. • Students will receive inquiry week five of the semester. • Three class periods, (10 hours). • Work in groups of two or three.
Light Bulb Evaluation • Students will evaluate Incandescent, LED and CFL light bulbs at common wattage ratings • For each type of light bulb, students will be required to: • measure the energy consumption • calculate carbon footprint • provide a cost analysis • measure output of light • Students are provided with materials and must develop an inquiry that will include a hypothesis, experimental procedures, data analysis and conclusion
Prior Knowledge • Proficiencies/ Prerequisites:College Reading, Basic Writing & Basic Algebra I • Computer Skills:Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet Research. Materials • Computer -with Internet, Excel, Word & PowerPoint • “Kill-A-Watt” Meter • LED, CFL & Incandescent Light Bulbs • Light Sensing Meter(Photo resistors, Photovoltaic model cell optional) • Light Bulb Socket • Ruler/Meter Stick
Student Documentation • One Page Description of Experiment • Carbon Foot Print Calculations • Diagram of Experiment • Cost Analysis – (Cost vs. Time Plot &“Break Even” Point) • Daily Journal/Lab Notebook • Classroom Presentation
