2. Mass Movement • Mass movement refers to loose, weathered material that moves down slope due to the influence of gravity. The loose material is known as regolith.Mass move can be either fast or slow, this will be shown in more detail later on in the slideshow.

3. Soil creep is the slowest type of mass movement. Soil creep is greatest at the surface and decreases with the depth of the soil. Soil creep moves at approximately 1cm a year!!!! Soil Creep

4. Avalanche • An avalanche is the very rapid movement of snow down slope. Avalanches occur when the weight of the snow is too much for the slope to hold.

5. Bog bursts • Bog bursts usually occur on upland slopes where the layers of peat on the bogland become saturated with rain. This occurs when the water cannot soak downwards. As a result, the bog flows down the hill causing devastation.

6. Mudflows • Mudflows occur when saturated regolith flows rapidly down slopes. They can also occur as a result of volcanic activity. There was a terrible mudflow in Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia in the year 1985 in which 25,000 people were tragically killed.

7. Landslides • Landslides occur when a slope becomes unstable, resulting in the very rapid and devastating movement of regolith down a steep slope. Landslides occur in areas which have been undercut by road building, river or coastal erosion or deforestation. (Deforestation, clearance or clearing is the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use. Examples of deforestation include conversion of forestland to farms, ranches, or urban use)
