  1. Week 4 Message Outline Discipleship The Purpose of the message is to illustrate: - Jesus wants disciples (followers), not just “believers” - There are two types of discipline (corrective & trained) - Discipline involves having self control - We are to be disciples…and also to disciple others - We are either disciples of good health habits or bad ones

  2. Discipleship… …means embracing and assisting in spreading the teaching of others. Teaching Point The first statement Jesus ever made in His public ministry was for others to become His disciples. Supporting Biblical Passage:“Come follow me, I will make you fishers of men” – Mark 17

  3. “Discipleship” comes from the word “Discipline” Discipline can either be: 1 – External Corrective Punishment 2 – Internally Trained Self-Control Teaching Point God has given us the capacity to be self-disciplined. Supporting Biblical Passage:“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7

  4. Self-Control is a teaching of Jesus and it is a requirement for Discipleship Supporting Biblical Passage:“Be self-controlled and alert.” 1 Peter 5:8 “It (God’s grace) teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled.” Titus 2:12 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22

  5. The Importance of Discipleship to Others • Benefits Include: • Re-enforcement of our own understanding and our own efforts • Helping others to know and experience the benefits of being in relationship with God • Good spiritual and physical health Supporting Biblical Passages: “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 19-20

  6. Final Teaching Point Having discipline and being a disciple of Jesus teaching is the only way to be spiritually and physically healthy. You Get To Choose… The Power of Free Will
