  1. 3D STUDIO ART SEMESTER COURSE

  2. Bell Ringer- Assessment • What are the types of sculptural processes?

  3. WHAT IS 3D ART? • There are several categories of processes in order to create 3D artworks: • Additive* • Subtractive* • Assemblage • Relief • Molding • Modeling • Casting

  4. CLASS OVERVIEW • Traditional & Experimental practices • Explore contemporary issues in art & design within the context of a working studio environment • Emphasis in this process is on skill development & the generation of ideas through a materials-based & 3-Dimensional process of creating • Students will be required to conduct research on the historical use & development of techniques learned in class.

  5. SUBTRACTIVE SCULPTURE • 3-D work made by removing excess material from a larger piece of material

  6. ADDITIVE SCULPTURE • 3-D work made by putting pieces of material together to build up a form.

  7. ASSEMBLAGE • A type of sculpture process where found objects are attached together by glue, nails, welding, etc. • Typically mixed media constructions

  8. MOLDING • The sculpture process of securing an impression, and molds (hollow forms) provide the method for materials to take on and retain shape. • Typically used in permanent media such as: bronze, resins, cements, and plasters.

  9. CASTING • Creating forms by pouring liquid material into a mold and allowing it to harden • This is the resulting image of a mold (the inside shape)

  10. MODELING • The sculpture process of manipulating a flexible material into a sculptural form. • Creating forms with pliable materials such as clay by using the hands and tools

  11. CARVING • The sculpture process of cutting away material to reveal the desired image • Media to carve – wood, marble, other varieties of stone

  12. RELIEF SCULPTURE • To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. • What is actually performed when a relief is cut in from a flat surface of stone or wood is a lowering of the field, leaving the unsculpted parts seemingly raised.

  21. Sculpture Project 1:Lost & Found Box

  22. You are to find & collect several miscellaneous objects consisting of about 15-20 items of various sizes • Find a shoebox or box top

  23. Sculpture Project 1: Lost & Found Box • Using your sketchbook, create five thumbnail sketches of your found objects arranged in a sculpture within the box • Begin assembling your Lost & Found Box!

  24. Requirements for your Lost & Found Box Project • Craftsmanship/Neatness • Creativity • At least 5 thumbnail sketches • At least 15-20 found items in sculpture in a variety of sizes/shapes • Organization of items reflects the use of the elements & principles of art • One unified color • Written reflection of the project
