  1. 3D Studio Exam

  2. Idea of the exam • In this file you will find different items • All have a FACTOR from 3 to 15 • Your task is to select one of the items that you would like to model, and then make a 3D version of that object • Your score for the object you make will be your points times the factor • So, if you take a factor 9 object and make it well, you a grade of 4, and your score is 36

  3. What will I be watching for? • I will be watching for solid basic knowledge and an eagerness to try things • Pick the object you think you can finish • Try to get the essence of the object out (the ’toasterness’ of the toaster etc.) since you cannot have three-view images of the objects • Remember: structure, edits, material, render • User RENDERTABLE to produce the JPG file

  4. Remember that… • Sometimes you need to start from a primitive, sometimes an extruded spline offers the best possibilities • Compound objects work for many objects • Remember lofting for splines that need shape • Also remember the lathe for round objects…etc etc etc.

  5. How to submit your work? • I need to see both the .MAX file and a rendered .JPG • Use RENDERTABLE to do the final .JPG • Pack your two files in a ZIP and mail it to me • I will then check them and grade you • If you can send the files today, fine! • If not, you have ONE WEEK until Mar 20.

  6. FACTOR 3 FILES • Kitchen paper holder • Made of metal, you can choose the surface

  7. FACTOR 3 FILES • Wooden rolling pin • Must have two similar handles • A metal pin goes inside the roller and connects the handles

  8. FACTOR 3 FILES • Wooden rolling pin • Must have two similar handles • A metal pin goes inside the roller and connects the handles

  9. FACTOR 3 FILES • Ikea lamp • Use the BEND modifier to do the bendable part • Use helix for the bend part

  10. FACTOR 3 FILES • Ikea wooden shoe rack • You do not need to do the shoes • All wooden construction

  11. FACTOR 6 FILES • Ikea frying pan • Note two different materials, chrome and black • The handle is attached with a rivet (niitti)

  12. FACTOR 6 FILES • Ikea muffin pan • You may want to have many segments on the top and then push down roughly circular selections • Then use TURBOSMOOTH modifier or other smoother

  13. FACTOR 6 FILES • Ikea shoe rack • How about splines for the ends and narrow cylinders for the spokes? Just curious… • Surface black metal

  14. FACTOR 6 FILES • Ikea kitchen utensil tin • Cylinder, but extruded in or a spline extruded out? Your choice • Wall thickness about 2 mm • Six times the holes around the tin • Chrome surfaces

  15. FACTOR 6 FILES • Ikea kitchen stool • Upper cushion is a hemisphere and so is the leg part • In between probably a cone? • White plastic material below, grey matte plastic top

  16. FACTOR 9 FILES • Ikea ceiling lamp • Both the lamp and the black cover cup must be in, as well as the black cable • Chrome top, white inside • Lathe? Hmmm….

  17. FACTOR 9 FILES • Ikea cupboard • Separate legs attached to a metal rectangle • Separate doors • Note the ribs in the doors and the locks

  18. FACTOR 9 FILES • Ikea toaster • Note the two separate materials • Bonus for the toasts

  19. FACTOR 9 FILES • Globe map • Search the Internet for a bitmap • Steel stand, copper arc holding the globe • Two steel cylinders join the arc to the globe

  20. FACTOR 12 FILES • Ikea cupboard • Note slanted shelves and metal back legs • Side panel and front legs are one piece

  21. FACTOR 12 FILES • Internet radio • Use bitmap for the display, i.e. make it in Photoshop as JPG and paste as material

  22. FACTOR 12 FILES • For this one, the 20th and so on building will do • Bonus for lamps and the building at the back

  23. FACTOR 15 FILES • First do one lamp and then triple copy • No need to attach lighting to the lamps • Note wooden knobs on the lamps • The holes are the hardest part

  24. FACTOR 15 FILES • Do the chess board and at least the soldiers, towers, and bishops • You can change the design of the board and the pieces

  25. BONUS TASK • You can come over and suggest an object that you want to make • I will issue you a factor for it and you can then design it to your own specs • If you do the bonus, you must submit a high quality file for it
