  3. Impact on staff appreciate the courage that students have inspired by hearing the students’ stories powerful stuff compelling now that I know… I am going to… reminded me what we’re here for easy to relate to and think of the implications for teaching and learning

  6. The bringing together of faculty and students for discussion of the processes of teaching and learning in which they are jointly involved (rather than the usual focus on the content of the curriculum) is as rare as it is valuable. • (Asmar 1999)

  7. Impact: staff views The insights I have gained as an academic are considerable. (The project) provided some obvious indicators of ways to frame academic practice It helped to translate some of the things I had been thinking/writing about into the domain of practice Having students there expressing their views and telling of their experience, made the whole thing much more concrete and immediate

  8. Why impact on staff? • Students contribute valuable insights through: • reflective opportunities created • safe, constructive environment provided • views sought and valued

  9. Value: students’ views (I gained) a feeling of accomplishment and relevance, people listened to what I had to say I liked being listened to I found the interaction between staff and students very beneficial It created a platform for me to spell out my experiences

  10. An unforeseen consequence (was that the experience) has been very positive for the students and has had an impact on their approach to the course and their discussions with fellow students. (Duffy et al2003)

  13. Staff views: depth and clarity • The thing that struck me most profoundly was the comments of the students. I found it very enlightening Student views are vitally important in learning more about teaching and learning Before we teach we need to listen and understand coherent incisive student comments students’ input was invaluable

Staff views: authenticity Made the statistics live and much more meaningful Actually seeing and hearing responses carries a veracity that reading through piles of module feedback never can genuine The impact of a ‘live’ student beats the books any time frank honest opinions Without empirical evidence we’re left with guesswork

  15. How can we provide meaningful opportunities for: • students to voice their experiences of learning and teaching ? • staff to hear, to see the implications for academic practice and to respond ?

  16. Hearing the student voice project • Investigate and promote the use of the student voice in informing academic practice by: • develop and evaluate case studies capturing and harnessing student voices • investigate student issues • share outcomes • build a community of practice.

  25. There should be more listening to the students. More listening would create more participation with students, more involvement, more interest from students
