Survival Tips • You’ve entered a new phase: • The test is important but learning to care for the patient is more so. • Determine how you wish to measure success ?? • A student thinks learning occurs in the textbook a doctor knows it occurs at the bedside.

Survival Tips • Don’t stand when you can sit, don’t sit when you can lay down. • Eat when you can, Sleep when you can, when in doubt give fluids and don’t mess with the pancreas. • It is better to look good than feel good. • Take care of yourself. • Remember to take care of the ones at home.
Survival Tips I’ll sleep when I’m dead. It is better to burn out than fade away. • Relax and have fun learning.
Survival Tips Exam Preparation: • Read a standard text early in the rotation. • Practice questions with a clock at the end of the rotation. • Carry photocopies of books in your pocket. • Use everyone around you as a resource.
Clinical Responsibilities • Patient ownership • Call (Over-night, Q4) • OR • Clinic • H&Ps (5 GS, 1 Vas, 1 Breast, 1 Trauma) • Mentors • Conferences • Patient / Procedure Log • Student Lectures
Clinical Responsibilities Work Hours: • Post-call go home after AM rounds • Must return for all educational activities including lectures • Returning student s must be in professional attire
Clinical Responsibilities Exam Week: • No call the night before OSCE or written exam • No clinical responsibilities the day between OSCE and written exam • Must return to hospital immediately after the OSCE for day time duties
Evaluations • Clinical Evaluation: • 35%, Subjective • H&Ps: • 15%, Subjective • OSCE: • 15%, 0bjective • Final Exam: • 35%, Objective • Pass = > 15%tile • The final grade is final
Evaluations • Honors: If you get an A in all 4 areas of evaluation. • In progress: Failure of one area but pass all other areas of evaluation. • Failure: Fail two or more areas of evaluation.
Re-mediation • In progress: • Clinical evaluation: successfully repeat 4 weeks of rotation • H&Ps: successfully complete four H&Ps • OSCE: successfully repeat the OSCE • Exam: successfully pass exam, up to three attempts • The final grade will be calculated using the new data and will be down graded one letter grade unless that grade is a “C”. • Failure: The student must repeat the entire clerkship.
Miscellaneous • OR Orientation & Scrub Class. • Skills lab. • Injury or illness. • Family emergency.
