  2. Francis & Trinity • See God as a loving communion • Not over-emphasizing unity of God over trinity of divine persons • We are images of God-as-Trinity when we are persons-in-relationship (not the ideal of the isolated individual)

  3. The Holy Trinity • Icon by Andrei Rublev (ca. 1410-1420) • (visitors to Abraham, Sarah in Gen. 18) • God as communion of loving relationship • “our Abba,” “the Beloved,” and “life-giving Spirit” • The Word, “the Beloved Son,” at the Heart of the Trinity

  4. The Word became flesh • Francis & Clare meditate on “the humility of the Incarnation” • The Creator becomes a Creature • Jesus and Mary are models of humanity • (Adam and Eve come in 2nd place) • Christmas is the great feast of all creatures: their reason for being!

  5. Follow Jesus’ footprints • Live with the Gospel as primary guide • (not the Acts of the Apostles as model) • The words of Jesus become flesh in deeds • In poor, humble circumstances • The great revelation of Jesus as divine: • Washing the feet of his disciples • A surprising revelation: God is humble!

  6. Love accepts even suffering • Jesus is “lifted up” on the cross (John) • Cross is primarily mystery of love, not pain • We are “lifted up” with Jesus • Jesus is “first-born” of all creation • The destiny of all creatures is transformation, “new heavens and earth”

  7. Creation as Kin • Francis calls all creatures “brother” and “sister” (“Canticle of the Creatures”) • Creation is not an obstacle, but a help in our journey to God • Everything was created “for Christ, with Christ, in Christ” • Creation reveals a generous Creator
