The 44 phonemes DVD clip
Phonic Definitions! • Grapheme • Letters that represent the phoneme • Could be 1 letter, 2 letters or more • t, ai, igh, ough

Segmenting • Identifying individual sounds in a spoken word • h-i-m • s-t-or-k • writing down letters for each sound (phoneme) to form the word him and stork
Segmenting Activity • Now it is your turn.... Use the sheet to work out how many phonemes are in these words.... boy string curl thorn thought shouting
Can you use the phoneme frame to segment the sounds in these words?
Did you get it right? • boy = b-oy = 2 phonemes • curl = c-ur-l = 3 phonemes • thorn = th-or-n= 3 phonemes • string = s – t – r – i – ng = 5 phonemes • thought = th-ough-t = 3 phonemes • shouting = sh-ou-t-i-ng = 5 phonemes
TRICKY WORDS • Words that are not phonically decodeable • e.g. was, the, I • Some are ‘tricky’ to start with but will become decodeable once we have learned the harder phonemes • e.g. out, there,
Letters and Sounds • Split into 6 phases • Phase 1: listening and oral skills • Phase 2: learning specific letters • Phase 3: Teaching graphemes with 2 letters • Phase 4 : Graphemes in words • Phase 5 : Alternative pronunciations and graphemes for phonemes (spelling focus) • Phase 6: Fluency of reading and accurate spelling
Letters and Sounds • Children always work within the Phase that is appropriate to their learning. • Assessment is regular and groupings sorted accordingly • The Letters and Sounds progression of year groups and corresponding phase may not go hand in hand, depending on the progression of the children
The Year 1 Phonics Screening Test • 1:1 with teacher • 40 words including ‘psuedo-words’ • tox, bim, vap, ulf, quemp • jound, blurst, stroft
Reading at home • Everyday please! • Book shelves are carefully assessed and teachers will indicate when it is time to move (link to comprehension skills, not just accuracy) • Children are responsible for changing books • Reading together other ‘fun’ books • Mix of fiction and non-fiction • Asking questions
