Lions Tech – Getting Your Masters CSCI 112: Lions on Social Networking
Course Curricullum • We will cover: • Facebook Pages • Twitter • Google + • Mobile Social Media (Foursquare, Instagram, etc.)
Facebook • Facebook is arguably one of the most visited sites on the Internet due to its ability to connect people and supply them with updates about friends, companies, clubs, and communities. • Besides a Lions club’s members having a Facebook account, the Lions club itself can have a Facebook page. • This allows members and “fans” to follow updates related specifically to the Lions club including: • Upcoming fundraisers and meetings. • Announcing new members • Service projects - Past, Present, and Future
GETTING a FACEBOOK PAGE • Log into Facebook’s website. • Go to http://www.facebook.com/pages in your web browser. • Choose Company, Organization, or InstitutionIn the pull-down menu, select Non-Profit Organization • Enter your club name in the bottom space. • Select the Check box acknowledging that you agree to the terms of Facebook. • Click Get Started.
Updating a Facebook Page • Add pictures • Announce club goals and achievements • Announce new members • Promote upcoming fundraisers – events and ads • Show service projects completed in your community. • Promote upcoming service projects, meetings, and Lions fellowships.
Updating a Facebook Page • Need to update on the go? Facebook has apps for all of the smartphone flavors. • Not just a user app, but a pages app too. • Give multiple members control of the club’s Facebook page so you can guarantee that club news stays current on the page. • Make sure you don’t use vulgar words or update with questionable content. You’re representing your club, not you.
TWITTER • Twitter is a social network where all updates are under 140 characters. • VERY Popular amongst mobile phone and tablet users. • You can refer to people in posts with @username. • You can “categorize” or reference a topic with #hashtags • You can private tweet someone by typing d @username message • You can add shortened links to posts using free services like tiny.url and bit.ly • Re -tweet someone’s post, by copying their tweet and entering RT @username message
TWITTER • Example “tweets”: Having fun w/ @uplclions at the #lionsclub Leadership seminar! http://bit.ly/3ScBfd #weserve Welcome to our newest member @picklescoop! #weserve #lionsclub #newmember
Goggle + • Google’s version of social networking • Allows you to make a “community page” where members and followers can see updates from your club • It allows you functions like adding pictures, links, and text updates. • Using Google +, you can participate in Hangout chats where members can meet for a committee meeting or an impromptu board/club meeting. • Share a club calendar with members or publicly. • Share documents with members (meeting notes, newsletters, coorespondence, etc) • Has an app on all smartphone and tablet platforms.
MOBILE SOCIAL NETWORKING • Besides the aforementioned social networks and their apps, there are other social networks out there that may be useful. • Foursquare – A location based social network where you check in at different locations and events for points, badges and mayorships. • Badges are awarded for achieving various goals like visiting particular style restaurants(hamburger joints, Chinese, Italian, Pizza, Mexican, Sushi, Coffee Shops) or locations (shopping, gyms, sports arenas, or celebrations like Mardi Gras or bowling) • Mayorship of a location is awarded to the person that checks in the most at that particular location/event. • Check in at Lions gatherings, service projects and fundraisers and mention Lions Club. Share your update with other social networks to attract new members and patrons.
Instagram • Instagram is a mobile phone centric app where users post pictures or video and give a brief description. • You also can add “filters” to a picture to give it an artistic look and feel. • Similar to Twitter, you add #hashtags to your description to notate a topic.
OTHER Social Networks • Vine – Add videos with a description (uses #hashtags) • LinkedIn – Similar to Facebook, but for professional networking. • MySpace – Previously considered “dead”, getting a fresh start with new financial backers. Similar in features and concept to Facebook.
In Sum • With the popularity of social networking, having a presence on Social Networking sites has become critical to keep in the public’s eye. • Getting your club on social media sites is easy and can benefit you with new members, people interested in your events, and for promoting the good things Lions do.
