  4. Course Goals • Basic chemical concepts • Scientific Methods • Physiochemical topics • Problem Solving

  5. Course Prerequisites • No previous chemistry • Intermediate algebra • College level reading and writing skills

  6. Required Textbooks • Chemistry and the Living Organism - Bloomfield, 6th Edition

  7. Required Textbooks • Laboratory Manual for Chemistry, General, Organic and Biological - Timberlake, 6th Edition

  8. Required Textbooks • Medical Dosage Calculations - Olsen, Ablon and Giangrasso, 6th Edition

  9. Required Items • Calculator - with LOG function • SAFETY GOGGLES

  10. Exams • Lecture Exams • Dosage Calculation Exams • Comprehensive Final Exam

  11. 4 Exams @ 100 points Drop one exam for grade calculation Cover lectures, text readings and problems Short answer, multiple choice, matching, problems Lecture Exams

  12. Exams - given during laboratory period Each exam is 1-1/2 hours No make-up exams Lecture Exams

  13. Dosage Calculation Exams • 2 exams - matching and short answer • Each 100 points • NO MAKE-UP EXAMS

  14. Comprehensive Final • 200 points • Multiple Choice • Failure to take final exam: F grade

  15. Thursday 1:00 - 3:50 pm 100 points - assignments, quizzes, and unknowns Reinforce lecture Measurement and observation Foundation for sciences Laboratory

  16. Laboratory Safety • Wear eye protection!! • Wear appropriate clothing • Wear shoes that cover feet

  17. Laboratory Safety • Read bottle labels • Correctly assembled apparatus

  18. Laboratory Safety • Possibility of fire or explosion • Disposal of chemicals and wastes

  19. Laboratory Safety • Must attend scheduled safety lecture • Must complete required documents • Failure to attend safety lecture and to complete documents will result in dismissal from class

  20. Computer Problem Sets • Five computer generated problem sets • Extra credit points

  21. Attendance • Lecture: expected to attend lectures; do not be late for class

  22. MUST attend scheduled lab NO makeup labs Miss > 2 labs, dropped from class Missed lab - deduct 15 points from lab grade Failure to attend lab check-in results in course grade of F Attendance - Laboratory

  23. Grading • Lecture exams* 300 points • Dosage exams 200 points • Final Exam 200 points • Laboratory 100 points • TOTAL possible: 800 points *3 of 4 lecture exams considered for grade

  24. Grade Distribution • A 712 points or > • B 608 - 711 points • C 480 - 607 points • D 416 - 479 points

  25. Dropping • Initiate drop with instructor • Must complete lab checkout • Complete paper work for Registrar
