About Me • BA in Liberal Studies from Cal State Long Beach, Multiple Subjects Credential Program from Cal State Fullerton, Masters Degree in Education from Chapman University • 17th year teaching, 9 years in 5th grade, 6 years in 4th grade, 2nd year in 6th • 2nd year at DMMS • Dance Teacher • Married with 2 children: daughter in 7th grade, son in 5th grade
6th Grade • Big change for the students coming to middle school! • Separated from the 7th and 8th graders • Encourage responsibility, independence, and self-esteem
Curriculum:Math 6 – Topics include fractions, decimals, percent, geometry, probability, and algebra. Students will be responsible for keeping a math notebook. Each day the students will complete a warm-up, class notes, and homework. Text: Prentice Hall Mathematics, California 6th Grade Math, 2009Pre-Algebra –Topics include algebraic expressions and integers, properties, decimals, fractions, exponents, ratios, proportions, percent, multi-step problems, linear/nonlinear functions and graphing, spatial thinking, geometry, data analysis and probability. Students will be responsible for keeping a math notebook. Each day the students will complete a warm-up, class notes, and homework.Text: Prentice Hall Mathematics, California Pre-Algebra, 2009Science 6 – Sixth grade science focuses on earth science. We will be studying the topics of geology, meteorology, oceanography, and ecology. Students will be responsible for keeping a science notebook. The students must keep all class work and homework assignments in their science notebook.Text: CPO Science, CPO Focus on Earth Science
Materials Needed • Below are items you will need this year for 6th grade math and science. Please have all items ASAP! • Two single subject spiral notebooks, 11 inches by 8.5 inches( one for math and one for science). Make sure it is this size!! • Glue sticks • Pencils (Always have several) • Highlighter • Ruler • Erasable pens (blue or black) • Red pens (for correcting) • Colored pencils • Scissors • 3 by 5 index cards • Markers • White board marker and eraser (old sock or piece of cloth will do) • Loose leaf college ruled paper
Grading Policies • Grades will be calculated using a weighted average. • Math Science • Tests 50% Tests 50% • Notebook 20% Notebook 20% • Quizzes/Projects 20% Quizzes/Projects 20% • Homework 10% Homework/Labs 10% • **Extra Credit is not given.
Notebooks • Notebooks need to be at school every day. • Notebooks must be 11 x 8 ½ (or larger) • Notebooks must be complete. When a student is absent, it is important that the student make-up the notes/work missed • Please check notebooks nightly for completion and initial.
Homework • Students will be assigned math homework Monday thru Thursday. Occasionally, a math assignment or project will need to be completed over the weekend. The homework will be checked and/or collected and graded for completeness (100% effort) and neatness. To receive credit for the work, students must write the problem (in pencil), andshow all their work. It is not acceptable to write the answers only. Corrections must be made in ink. • Homework is due at the beginning of class. Late homework will not be accepted. A checkmark will be given in your child’s notebook for each assignment that is complete. If an assignment is incomplete, an “I” will be written. You can check your child’s agenda daily to ensure homework has been completed.
Projects • Expect projects in both math and science: • Math: 2-4 projects– scale drawings, fraction flip-book, math A-Z book (possibilities) • Science: 2-4 projects – Earth’s core
Agenda • All students will be issued an agenda. This is an important tool for success during the middle school years. Homework assignments will be written on the board for students to copy into the agenda. Please check your student’s agenda daily for completeness, and sign daily when the work is complete. If your child was unable to copy down the homework assignment due to an absence, you can always check the class website.

Communication • It is very important that home/school communication be maintained! One of the best ways to communicate with me is by email: sflores@murrieta.k12.ca.us. I will get back to you as soon as possible regarding your questions or concerns. Aeries is also available for you to check your student’s grades and assignment completion as well. Checking both the agenda and notebooks will also keep you up-to-date as to what is getting covered in class.
