BABY ENGLISH, REALLY??!!Karen Muckey – The English Business, Sevilla
LET’S DISCUSS! • What are the arguments for and against starting to teach English to children as young as 4 months? • Why should we wait? • What could be the benefits of starting young? • What would be the most difficult challenge of teaching babies in your opinion? • What does it take to be a good baby teacher? Is teaching babies for everybody?
STRUCTURING BABY CLASSES • Classes are given at a nursery school in the morning hours as part of the school’s curriculum • 30 minute classes • 2 days/week or 4 days/week • 3 different groups • 4 months to 1 year • 1 year olds • 2 year olds
THE ESSENTIALS • A PUPPET • MUSIC (lots and lots of it!) • FLASHCARDS AND VISUALS (Infantil Pack) • STORY BOOKS
BABY BABIES4 MONTHS TO 1 YEAR • SEAT ALL BABIES IN STROLLERS, HIGH CHAIRS OR HAMMOCKS, FACING THE TEACHER • PREPARE TO SWEAT! CLASSES MUST BE DYNAMIC AND MOVE QUICKLY • TEACHERS SHOULD MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH BABIES AND MOVE AROUND THE ROOM • HAVING THE NURSERY SCHOOL TEACHER IN THE ROOM HELPS WITH THIS AGE
BABIES1 YEAR OLDS • MOST CAN SIT ON THE FLOOR (“INQUIETOS” IN HIGH CHAIRS) • THIS AGE CAN BE THE MOST CHALLENGING • AS THE YEAR PROGRESSES THEY CAN DO MORE – REPEATING, DOING THE MOTIONS TO THE SONGS, PARTICIPATING IN THE MORE ACTIVE SONGS AND ACTIVITIES
BIG BABIES2 YEAR OLDS • ALL CHILDREN SHOULD BE SEATED ON FLOOR OR IN CHAIRS • THIS IS THE YEAR WHERE WE SEE PRODUCTION NOT JUST REPETITION • PARTICIPATION IS MUCH MORE ACTIVE • EASIER FOR THE TEACHER!
TRAINING BABIES TO BEHAVE • Learn their names as quickly as possible • How they are seated is important for control • Eye contact • Teacher attitude – happy and fun! • Use sounds to call attention • Use chants to get them quiet or seated • Stop unwanted behaviour as soon as it starts • Do not continue the class until unwanted behaviour has completly ended • Seat a child next to you in a chair or put them in a high chair if unwanted behaviour continues • Make classes dynamic and fun!
WHY DO IT??? • LEARNING AND ASSIMILATING ENGLISH COMES MUCH MORE EASILY AT A LATER AGE (FACILIDAD Y NATURALIDAD) • SPEAKING IS THE EASY PART OF ENGLISH FOR THE CHILDREN • EXCELLENT PRONUNCIATION • EXCELLENT UNDERSTANDING OF SPOKEN ENGLISH • THEY LEARN TO LOVE ENGLISH!!!! • THE ACADEMY BENEFITS TOO!
MY BABY - DAHLIA • She loves the pictures! • She loves the puppet! • She knows ALL the songs and sings constantly! • She never gets tired of the music or the class • She sings in English, Spanish and even in other languages
