Getting started We discussed where we could find water on earth. Our class then decided to determine what was meant by ‘drinking’ water. We learnt about the water cycle.
Discussing our ideas and deciding on an area to work on We generated lots of ideas and had many discussions about what our design brief for the KDC Built Environment Challenge should be. Our decision was to work on the new Aboriginal garden that had been planted this year. We decided on this area of the school as our class has helped mulch the garden to try and save drinking water. To help this garden establish, drinking water had to be used to water the garden. We were lucky to have had some rainy days to help us on our quest.
The issue To design a water tank to capture rain water from the roof of the building to reduce the consumption of drinking water.
The solutions Our class designed some rain water tanks on paper.
Our models We also made models of our rain water tanks in our Aboriginal garden.
How much water could be captured from the roof of the building? Using tape measures and trundle wheels we were able to find out that we could potentially harvest 8 228.14 litres of rain water for the month of September.
What we have learnt about the type of water tank we could purchase? After researching a variety of water tanks we decided that for our school we would need a round water tank made from poly/plastic. Reasons for our choice: this is the cheapest type of water tank to purchase we have enough space in the garden for a round tank it is durable needs minimal site preparation
What are we going to do with our knowledge? We are going to present our proposal of a water tank near the Aboriginal garden to the Principal of the school. We hope that in the near future our school will be able to install a rain water tank near the garden to save the consumption of drinking water.
What we have learnt? it is important to save drinking water we as students can help save drinking water we have learnt about the water cycle we have learnt about the styles of tanks available and what these tanks are made of WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
