Twig • Reddish with small lenticels • leaf scars V-shaped • 3 bundle scars, lateral buds slightly stalked, may be collateral buds present. FIGURE 4 FIGURE 5

Flower • Small • hanging clusters • usually bright red but sometimes yellow • appear in early spring, before leaves FIGURE 11 FIGURE 13 FIGURE 12
