Animals of the Red Maple: Black Rat Snake • Largest in Virginia • They climb trees • Hide in woodpecker holes • Lay 5 to 30 eggs • 12 inches long when born • As a new born they are vulnerable to predators • Fully grown, only predators are humans • Non-poisonous • They constrict to kill • They hibernate

Animals of the Red Maple: Red-winged Blackbird • Most common is swamps and marshes • In fall, form flocks of thousands • Breed from February to August • Two or three broods a season • New nest each time • This prevents parasites in the nests • Three to five pale ages per nest • Each age with purple or brown spots

Interesting Facts • Probably the most common in our area • Wood is used for many things • Paper, furniture, cabinet, plywood, crates, flooring, railroad ties • Sap used for syrup (not that sweet though) • Most favorite food to White-tailed Deer • Many animals use the tree for food and shelter (approx. 80 different species)
