Regulation • Clean Water Act- Suggests using latex paints instead of oil-based whenever possible. • 2005- new set of regulations intended to limit releases of VOCs -- or volatile organic compounds was put into place • Oil Based Paints contain VOC’s so most have been discontinued on the paint market.
Oil Based Paints Uses • Artists use them for paintings because of its slow drying properties. Also is an ideal texture. • Domestic paint use such as interior or exterior of houses, fences, decks, railing, ect. • Resistant to UV rays and is extremely durable.
Manufacturing of oil based paints • Manufacture is environmentally harmful. • Paint has three main components • Pigment gives it color • resin makes the pigment stick when the paint is applied and forms a solid layer of paint. (petrochemicals) • solvent keeps the paint in liquid form and evaporates once the paint is exposed to air.
Side effects of oil-based paints • paints, stains and other architectural coatings produce about 9 percent of the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from consumer and commercial products • cannot be recycled as latex paints can. http://media.canada.com/b17a5268-e809-4db2-a84b-06fc4c00d03e/m1x00128_vocpaint.jpg
