  1. What is new year? • New Year's Day is the first day of the new year. It is celebrated as a holiday in almost every country in the world. • It is a time of fun, sharing with friends, remembering the past, and hoping for good things in the future.

  2. When did it all start? • In England, priests started to celebrate their New Years on March 10th. • They gave branches of mistletoe to people for charms. • Later, English people followed the custom of cleaning their chimneys on New Year's Day as they believed this brought good luck to the household for the coming year. • The expression "cleaning the slate" came from this custom. It means making resolutions to correct faults and bad habits.

  3. People resolve to improve themselves and their lifestyles in the New Year. • It is still custom today to make a resolution. • Have you made any New Year’s resolutions?

  4. New Year Around the World • New year is celebrated all over the world although not necessarily at the same time as here in the UK. • The Chinese, Egyptian and Jewish new year all have different start dates. • The Chinese New Year even starts at a different time every year!

  5. “Happy New Year” • China "Gung Hay Fat Choy " • Denmark "Godt Nytår" • France "Bonne Année" • Germany "Gutes Neues Jahr“ • Hawaii "Hauoli Makahiki Hou“ • Ireland "Aith-bhliain fé mhaise dhuit” • Israel “Shana Tova“ • Italy "Buon Capo d'Auno“ • Japan "Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu“ • Netherlands "Gelukkig Nieuwjaar" • Norway "Godt Nytt År"

  6. New Years Resolutions • Is there anything that you would like to get better at this year? • Is there anything that you may like to stop? • Could you be more helpful in any way?

  7. Here are some examples… • I will try to work harder at school. • I will eat more vegetables and less sweets. • I will do some more exercise. • I will try to keep my bedroom tidy. • I will smile more. • I will always get my work finished on time. • I will be kinder to my brother/sister.

  8. Final Thought • Think Smart, work smart, look smart, behave smart in 2015!!
