Emerald Ash Borer • It is here to stay • Latest research on predator insects is not out • Population can be slowed regionally (SLAM) • Urban control options work • www.emeraldashborer.info/Best Website for up to date info
Asian Longhorned Beetle • Been in Ohio for 10 Years, (Estimated), first found in June 2011. All other known infestations found since 1996 have been declared “eradicated” • Does not seem to move fast/produce huge #’s • Generalist; Maples, Birch, Willow, Box Elder • Lifecycle is similar to EAB, can change to an adult within one year; Slower up here?
Beech Bark Disease • Present in the County • Scales protect insects • Disease follows scale after heavy infestation • 25% are supposed to live after an attack… • Urban options do exist
Forest Tent Caterpillar • Native, population booms every 10 years • We were overdue for a large boom in 2010 and we got it for 2 years! • Population is hardly noticeable now.
Oak Wilt • Seems rampant this year • DO NOT Prune oak during growing season • Oaks graft their roots • Pruning or construction damage is usually the cause
Wildlife Habitat Improvement • Before you start any chainsaw work…
Autumn Olive, Eradication • Invasive shrub • LOTS of berries • Nitrogen fixer • Stump applicator with broadleaf herbicide can be done anytime of the year except spring, its extremely effective.
