What is a Drug? Drug- Any substance (other than food) that can change the structure or function of the body or mind Example- cocaine and heroin Medicine- A drug that prevents , treats, or cures illnesses, or eases its symptoms Example- Tylenol, antibiotics Drug or Medicine? • Reasons we use medications: • Prevent Diseases example- vaccines • Fight Germs example- antibiotics • Relieve Pain example- ibuprofen • Treat other medical conditions example- cold medication
Types of Medications: Prescription Drugs: Medicines that can be used safely with a doctors written permission Example- antibiotics All drugs are tested for safety and approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA also decides which drugs are prescription and over-the-counter.
Common Prescription Drugs: Preparations of dead or weak germs that are most commonly injected into the body causing it to make antibodies. Examples- polio, measles, chicken pox Vaccines- Painkillers- Drugs used to treat severe or chronic pain Examples- Tylenol with codeine,Vicodin, Oxycontin Antibiotics Drugs made by microorganisms to stop or kill other microorganisms (germs) Only can be used against bacterial infections. Examples- penicillin, amoxycillin, cipro Prescription drugs should only be used by the person they are prescribed for because everyone has a different body chemistry, body size, symptoms, possible allergies, etc.
Over The Counter Drugs Drugs that are safe enough to be taken without seeing a doctor *Include more information by law than prescription drugs Examples include Tylenol, Robitussin cough syrup, etc.
Reactions to OTC and Prescription Drugs: Any reaction to a drug other than the one intended Examples- rash, nausea, dizziness, tiredness Side Effects- When a person’s body gets used to the effects of a drug and it take MORE to achieve the same effect -Tolerance Drug Interaction- When 2 or more drugs are taken at the same time. It can multiply (greatly increase) the effects, weaken the effects or cancel each other out! Mixing alcohol with tranquilizers is a multiplier effect! Addiction- The physical and mental need for a drug
Drug Use or Drug Abuse? Drug Use- Taking a drug as prescribed or according to the directions Drug Misuse- Using a drug in a way other than what is stated on the directions Drug Abuse- Using substances that are against the law or Not meant to enter the Human body

Using Medications Safely.... Always read the label for directions and potential side-effects- especially OTC drugs! Check the seal before opening the drug Check the expiration date and throw away all medication that has expired. Never take a drug that is prescribed for another person Let your doctor know right away if you experience any problems with prescription drugs.
