Aerosol loading in the Southeastern United States: Reconciling surface and satellite observations

This study aims to determine the causes of the seasonal cycle in aerosol loading in the Southeastern United States by comparing surface and satellite observations. The goal is to assess whether the GEOS Chem model can accurately simulate the seasonality in aerosol loading. The study also investigates the sources of aerosols above the surface, which are not adequately captured by the model.

  4. Can GEOS-Chem simulate the seasonality in aerosol loading? Seasonal Increase in AOD (Summer-Winter)/Winter Satellite Observations suggest 100-300% increase in column integrated AOD, GEOS-Chem suggests 40%

  5. What is not being accounted for in the GEOS-Chem simulations? AOD=[Mass Extinction Efficiency]x[Mass loading] Bias in Relative Humidity? Column Integrated Seasonal Difference in AOD ~40% Model captures this seasonality

  6. Underestimating Surface Mass Concentrations?

  7. Underestimating Mass Concentrations above the Surface? Mixing Height? Emissions? Winter (DJF) Summer (JJA) • Cannot capture enhanced above surface aerosols, but not due to mixing or surface source • What is the missing source above the surface?  SENEX campaign Summer 2013
