  2. Liverwort Info.. • There are more than 7000 species alive today • They are a more diverse group than the mammals. • Found in the Paleozoic Era, during the Devonian period. (360-410 mya)

  3. More Info… • They belong to the Bryophyte Phylum • Liverworts may be found on every continent, in every biome, and in most microhabitats!! • These are nonvascular plants with a gametophyte-dominant life cycle

  4. Adaptive Structures… • Cuticle • Prevents water loss from aboveground parts • Cellular Jacket • Protects sperm and egg producing structures • Holds in moisture • Large Gametophytes • Do not depend on sporophyte for nutrition • Sporophytes develop inside gametophyte tissues

  5. Morphology… • Many liverworts have a body known as a thallus whose leaves are indistinguishable. • It is attached to the substrate by minute, root-like limbs called rhizoids. Plagiochasma

  6. Life Cycle… Gametophyte Male- Female Sporophyte remains attached to the gametophyte and depends on it. The Gametophyte provides it with nutrients and water.

  7. Fertilization…

  8. Fertilization… • Eggs and sperm grow in tiny jacketed vessels at the tips of gametophytes. • Sperm reach the eggs by swimming through moisture clinging to plants. • Sporophytes come from Zygotes. • Each Sporophyte is composed of a stalk and jacketed structure in which spores develop Spores

  9. Importance… • It was once thought that the Liverworts cured diseases of the liver. • Scarcely used directly by humans, however, they reduce erosion along stream banks. • Collect and retain water in forests • Aid in desert soil crust formation • Sometimes found in aquariums to provide habitats.

  10. Specific Hepaticophyta… • Though you may not notice them, Liverworts are found all over our planet in many ways. Here are a few… Porella cordaeana Metzgeria
