  2. Cirrhosis Of The Liver Definition • Is Progressive destruction of liver cells • Also, The formation of fibrous scar tissue on the liver • Losing liver cells interferes with the liver’s ability to process nutrients, hormones and drugs • When a liver has Cirrhosis, it has a knobbly appearance

  3. Causes • Alcoholism • Chronic Viral Hepatitis B, C and D • Hereditary diseases (ex. Cystic Fibrosis) • Bile Ducts • Prolonged exposure to some medications or toxic chemicals such as insecticides, herbicides and cleaning solvents • Congestive Heart Failure • Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, which accompanies obesity, diabetes or lipid disorders.

  4. Symptoms • Weakness • Fatigue • Loss of Appetite • Nausea • Vomiting • Weight loss • Abdominal Pain and bloating when fluid accumulates in abdomen • Itching • Spiderlike blood vessels on skin • Jaundice

Diagnosis • Cirrhosis of the liver is very evident from history and findings on physical examinations • Blood Tests to find any increased release of certain enzymes that indicate inflammation in the liver • A liver scan or biopsy can be done • A laparoscope is inserted though a small incision in the abdomen • Cholangiography which is x-rays of the bile ducts

Treatment • Abstinence • Avoid toxins or medicines that cause liver injury • Low salty diet if swelling occurs in feet or hands • Cholestryamine to relieve itching • Endoscopic procedures • Laxatives to move toxins through intestines • Antibiotics if excess fluid in abdomen becomes infected • Antihypertensive drugs to reduce bleeding from oesophagus • Liver Transplant if vital

  7. Future Outlook • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) • Computed tomography (CT) • And ultrasound are all successful in detecting the complications of Cirrhosis • These imaging tests can also produce information on the extent of the liver damage

Other “Live” Facts • Cirrhosis is the 12th leading cause of death by disease, accounting for 27000 deaths per year. • Cirrhosis affects men slightly more than women • The amount of alcohol needed to cause Cirrhosis is ten cans of beer everyday for 10 years, That is 36500 beers! • Some males can start to produce breasts because the liver cannot take the estrogen out of the body if it is not functioning correctly
