Soil and Climate • Soil types in the State, Hill - red lateritic and valley- clay loam. • Soil contains small rock fragments, sand and sandy clay. • The top soil on the steep slopes are very thin. • In the plain areas, especially flood plains and deltas, the soil is of considerable thickness. • Soil on the steep hill slopes is subjected to high erosion • The normal pH value ranges from 5.3 to 6.8. • Normal rainfall – 1435 mm • Rainfall ranges from 933 mm at Imphal to 2593 mm at Tamenglong. • Temperature ranges from sub-zero to 36 degree Celsius.

Area under different crops, 2014-15 • Rice : 2,23, 100 ha ( Kharif-1,95,000ha+Prekharif -28,100 ha.) • Maize : 27,000 ha ( Kharif – 20,000 ha + Rabi – 7000 ha) • Wheat : 2250 ha • Pulses : 31000ha. ( kharif- 5000ha + Rabi – 26000ha) • Oilseeds : 37,500ha ( Kharif 8500 ha + Rabi – 29000ha) • Sugarcane: 6000 ha • Potato : 15,250ha • Net Area : 2,34,500ha • Gross Area: 3,60,000 ha. • Cropping Intensity: 153.52%

  5. Steps Taken up for Soil Health • Soil Testing Laboratories in 4(four) districts • 3(three) Mobile Soil Testing Van in 3 valley districts • Soil Health card issued • Organic inputs distributed • INM & IPM • Liming • Green Manuring

  6. Issues/Challenges • Soil Degradation • Pesticides • Chemical fertilizers • Sewage • Radionuclides • Biotic interference • Water logging • Acidity in soil (pH below 5.3) • Deficiency in macro and micro nutrients into the soil

Proposed Strategies • Scientific and Technical management • Populrasation of INM, IPM • Crop Diversification • Use of Organic inputs • Soil Testing • Promotion of Green Manure • Application of lime • Judicious use of chemical fertilizers ( on the basis of soil test recommendation)/ pesticides • Increasing Awareness of importance of Soil health
