  5. II….will kill your family… Spelled J-O-E-Y not J-O-I-E Not the point! Just that I AM YOUR HOST AND MY NAME IS JOIE.

  6. Through the years… • Cannibalism has been seen as wrong and it is. • What is it really? • What causes it? • Exceptions? • Morals • Against human nature • NOT a natural instinct

  7. Definition: Noun The act of eating one of your own Ceremonial, takes place at a ceremony of eating one of your own kind Choosing to do so

  8. Originated • Origin: Unknown • World Wide • Seen in our earliest ancestors

  9. Commonly used for • Fear • War • Love • Promise • Getting closer to family • Symbolic • Religion • War

  10. Survival • October 24th, 1765 • Peggy – 8 men aboard as well as cargo • Supplies not enough • Why? • Storm left boat stranded • 2 months stranded, no food • Ate own clothing • What would you do?

  11. Peggy • Slave ( considered cargo ) • Killed and eaten • Lasted 16 days before men began to get hungry • Began to draw lots on who was to be eaten next • Luckily, Peggy rescued the next day – no one else had to be eaten • Admitted to eating human flesh • Do not consider themselves cannibals

  12. Are they Cannibals? • Law over looked this • Humane way of dying • Shot to the head • Drew lots • Fair • When set to sail, sailors have unspoken rules. • Survive • Danger • Death

  13. Survival – broken down • Not naturally cannibalistic • Hunger becomes starvation • Blood cells aren’t delivering enough food • Starvation-body begins using own sources • Sugars/carbs • Fat reserves • Body protein • Final stage • Body eating itself • Muscle still functional but weak

  14. Survival – broken down • Still no food • Body shuts down what is not needed to survive • Only keeps brain, lungs, and heart alive • Still no food? • Cerebral cortex shut down • Human emotion • Full on survival mode • Cannibalism is okay

  15. Pushed • Circumstances • Push to limits • Will to live – “ beast” inside • Surviving • Cannibalism? • No • Surviving – no choice • Why? • Humane, pro-long, and admitted to eating human flesh • Knew circumstances

  16. Surviving • Circumstances • Understandable • Death • Inevitable-prolong as long as possible • Survive • Body shutting down • Unable to think right • No records of doing it once rescued

  17. Surviving

  18. Love • Papua New Guinea • ShileyLindenbaum, a anthropologist • Discovered cannibalistic tribe • Dead family and friends • Live on within living • Good food • New food source and is delicious

  19. Problem • Cycle • People kept dying • People kept eating the dead • Why? • Why do people eat the dead? • Why did people keep dying? • Why is the cycle never ending?

  20. Kuru • Means “shaking death” • Body trembles • Unable to control limbs • Unable to control bodily functions • Begins to turn into a “vegetable” • Can take minimum of 9 months before death • There are cases that it can take years to develop and cycle through

  21. Kuru prions usually are in the brain but there is a chance that the proteins are able to spread through the rest of the body. Here are a few pictures as to what “Kuru” look like.

  22. Eating the dead • Dead died for a reason • Not healthy • Most of the dead effected with Kuru • How it spreads • Seen as a good food source • Some say for love, keep the person alive in living • Most say for good food • Convenient food supply • Those eating the dead are the ones dying

  23. Eating the dead • Dying • Kuru • Infected • Immune • Prions • Brain • Mutated • Genes • Ancestors ate human flesh and people today are immune to prions • Mutation

  24. Love and good food? • Unhealthy • Spread of diseases • Not everyone is immune • Very few are, out of thousands tested only half had mutation • Against the law and looked down upon • Jail and fines • Complex • Chemicals go in and out • Not safe • Wrong • You are human. Morals. Ethics. • How is eating someone more respectful then keeping them in tact?

  25. Lifestyle • Live like that, is it wrong? • Eating out of love • Eating out of respect • Not healthy • Disease • Bacteria • Rituals usually make human bodies sit out for days before eating • Living conditions • Not good

  26. Not for love but for fear? • American southwest • Smashed bones found • No love in these markings • Animalistic • Dehumanize and spread fear • Message • Power • No shortage in food ( livestock and crops ) found • Savage

  27. What does this say? • NOT a necessity • Fear • Power • Warning • Message • Ritual burial • Chop up dead • Bury them all together • Eat flesh before hand

  28. This day and age? • China • Abortion • Females sold and consumed • One child per family policy • Delicacy • Male babies wanted • “High” delicacy • Sexual vigor • Belief

  29. Cases in America? • A man beat a person to death • Ax • Brain • Understand human behavior • Eyes • See spirit realm • Body found in 2012 • Cousin of suspect testified that in 2011 • Saw him with bloody ax, chopsticks, bloody clothes, and was told suspect ate brain and eyes with sake • Suspect qualified as “insane” and in psych ward

  30. Cannibalism: Views • Surviving • Eating the fallen • Survival of the fittest • Love • Respect • Caring • Good food • Power • Fear • Warning and message • Belief

  31. Continuation of cases today • China • Eat dead babies • “ High class” food • One child policy • Treatment of babies • Treat them as food • Dehumanize • Luxury • Illegal • MORALLY WRONG • Murder

  32. In America? • Insanity? • Killing • Is that ever okay? • Evil • Satanism • All equal • Illegal • Eating = “ No respect.” and “ Better than you “

  33. Is it ever okay? • Circumstances • Surviving: Last resort • Arguable, seen as okay given circumstances • Love • Disease • Rituals • Makes meat go bad • Power • Inhumane • Terror

  34. Conclusion? • Love • Die • Nice funeral • Best you can manage • Pray • Terror • Not insane • EVIL • Murder • Illegal • Belief • Not going to work • Real medicine
