Impact of virtual learning on Catalan Society Paco Rubio Carles Esquerré Tony Bates
Goals and objectives • Direct goal: • • to identify impact of virtual learning on Catalan society • Indirect goal: • • to identify role in particular of UOC over last 10 years
Objectives • To identify the impact of VL on: • • learners (numbers, demographics, IT skills, jobs) • • institutions (what institutions involved in VL) • • technology (developments/use) • • language and culture • • businesses • • others (to be identified)
Rationale • Ten years since web began to influence education • Need to ‘benchmark’ Catalonia: how does it compare on VL? • Identify strengths and weaknesses of VL • Provide government with factual information on impact of VL
Personnel • Project advisor: distinguished external social researcher (to be identified) • Consultants: Carles Esquerré and Paco Rubio • Research design:Tony Bates • Others: many!
Methodology • Work packages/sub-projects • Existing data: institutional records, e.g. UOC data-bases • Literature review • Questionnaires • Interviews • Focus groups • Action research by Ph.D. students
Issues • • identifying right research questions • • access to information • • ensuring objectivity (not UOC public relations) • • involvement of government and employers • • doing project quickly (1-2 years) • • relation with PIC
Current status • Draft outline • Tony Bates to develop full proposal (end of March?) • Funding to be identified/staff hired • Discussions with other projects (e.g. economic value of UOC degree)
Conclusion • Chance to highlight UOC’s impact on Catalan society • But not just UOC: identify who else is doing VL here • Must ensure objectivity - external partners • High impact study
