STD’s facts • 1 in 5 people in the U.S. has an STD • You can get an STD through any type of sexual contact (vaginal sex, anal sex, oral sex, and genital skin to skin contact). • Most STD symptoms are not noticeable • Every year, 1 out of 4 teens contract a STD. • Over 65 million people are living in the US with an incurable STD • The only way to know for sure if you have a STD is by getting tested by a doctor. • For curable diseases, doctor will prescribed an antibiotic for treatment. • The only way to make sure you don’t contract a STD is through abstinence. • Condoms are not 100%, but if used correctly, can reduce the risk of contracting a STD.
Chlamydia • 1 of the most common STD’s • You can get chlamydia from sexual intercourse , oral sex, and birth. • Symptoms can occur within 1-3 weeks in men. • Curable disease • Symptoms: Men • Pain in urination • Discharge from penis • Symptoms: Women • No symptoms • If not treated, can lead to cervical cancer

Gonorrhea • You can get gonorrhea through sexual intercourse and oral sex. • This is a curable disease. • Symptoms • Discharge from the vagina or penis. • Painful urination. • Men could feel pain and swelling in genital area. • Women can become infertile (inability to have children)

Syphilis • You can get syphilis through sexual intercourse and oral sex. • This is a curable disease. • If untreated, the bacteria can damage the heart, eyes, brain, nervous system, bones, joints, and almost any other parts of the body. • Could result in mental illness, blindness, heart disease, and death. • Symptoms • Red and brown sores could appear on the feet, hands, • lip, mouth, throat, and genital area.
Genital herpes • You can get genital herpes by having sexual intercourse, oral sex, and genital skin to skin contact. • There are two type of herpes (Type 1 & 2) • Type 1: Oral herpes • A cold sore that appears on the mouth, lip, or nose. • Type 2: Genital herpes • Sores that appear on the genital area. • Incurable disease. The virus stay in your body for life! • 1 out of 4 Americans have herpes. • Symptoms • Pain and itching in the genital area. • Sores can open up and fluid and blood will ooze out. • You may notice sores anywhere from 2- 20 days. • Still contagious even if sores are NOT present.

Medicine is treated for the warts, but virus is still there. • Symptoms • Bumps that look like warts on the genital area. • If untreated, warts can keep growing. • Can lead to cervical cancer in women.
HIV/AIDS • Ruins your immune system. • Typical HIV/AIDS patient will take about 40 pills a day. • HIV/AIDS is transmitted through sexual contact, birth, blood transfusion, and sharing needles. • This is an incurable disease. • 34.5 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the world • 1 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the US. • Symptoms • Weight loss • Fatigue • Fevers • Swollen lymph glands • Skin rashes • Diarrhea
