Motion • Request RevCom extend P802.11 by two years, as described in the IEEE-SA Operations Manual subclause 8.1.2, and as supported by the schedule described in document IEEE 802.11-10/0705r2. Bruce Kraemer (Marvell)
Introduction • This document presents the schedule and background information for P802.11** and seeks approval of the IEEE 802 EC to request IEEE RevCom to allow the 2-year extension. • ** Note, P802.11 is a revision project with a PAR expiration date of December 31, 2011. The output of this is known as P802.11REVmb. It includes maintenance changes from project P802.11mb. Bruce Kraemer (Marvell)
P802.11 Rationale for Extension IEEE STD 802.11-2007 was published in June 2007 Amendments 802.11k, 802.11r, 802.11y, 802.11w, 802.11n, 802.11p and 802.11z have been approved since then. Revision project P802.11 has rolled in k,r,y,w, n & p. 802.11z has been published and will be rolled in shortly. Amendments 802.11v and 802.11u are expected to be approved by the SASB in Feb 2011 using the continuous process and to be rolled into the published revision. According to the IEEE-SA Operations Manual (subclause 8.1.2), it is necessary to get approval of a 2-year extension to allow these amendments to be considered by RevCom, as their approval will be sought after the initial 3-year period. Background Information Bruce Kraemer (Marvell)
IEEE-SA Operations Manual • Subclause 8.1.2 – Amendments & Corrigenda • Up to three amendments can be approved before the standard shall be revised, unless the base standard has been approved or reaffirmed within the past three years. In the latter case, multiple amendments may be added until the base standard is three years old or three years have elapsed since the most recent reaffirmation of the standard. After the three-year period, RevCom shall defer consideration of additional amendments or corrigenda until a revision or a two-year extension request is approved by the IEEE-SA Standards Board. The standard shall not be reaffirmed if three or more amendments to the base standard exist. • If, for any extenuating circumstances, an exception to these rules is required, the Sponsor shall take its request for a two-year extension to RevCom. A project plan outlining the rationale for the request, as well as a schedule for the revision, also shall be submitted. RevCom will review the request and make a recommendation to the IEEE-SA Standards Board. Bruce Kraemer (Marvell)
