Political Map Political maps show the names and boundaries of countries, cities and transportation routes Capital cities are identified on political maps Major cities are shown on political maps Political maps can include physical features such as bodies of water Solid lines outline political boundaries

Physical map Physical maps highlight landforms and water features. The map key explains what each color and symbol stands for landforms Water features Physical maps use color to show elevation, the height of an area above sea level Look in text pg 364
Special purpose maps Special purpose maps present specific types of information such as: Climate/Weather * Time Zones * Vegetation/Natural resources/landmarks * Road/Street map * Grid locations * Historical expansion * Contour /Elevation*
Climate and Weather maps CLIMATE: • A climate map uses various colors to show different types of climate WEATHER: • A weather map uses various symbols to show weather patterns The day to day atmospheric conditions. Ex: Sunny w/showers in the afternoon General weather conditions over a long period of time.
Time zone maps • A time zone map helps you figure out what time it is in different parts of the world There are 24 time zones in the world -One for each hour of the day
Vegetation / resource maps VEGETATION: • A vegetation map uses colors or patterns to show what plants grow naturally in places Natural RESOURCEs: • A natural resources map uses symbols to show resources that are found in a place
Road/ street maps • Road maps are used for travelling • Names and types of roads are indicated • Distances between cities are labeled
Historical Expansion maps • Historical maps are used to show where things were at a certain time in history
Grid maps • Grid maps help you find location using a labeled system of squares • Often used with a map index
Contour Map • A contour map shows elevationusing isolines • ISOLINES Lines on a map that connect points of equal value
