Joseph Capgras • French Psychiatrist • 1923- he described what he called a form of non-schizophrenic paranoid psychosis. • It was given the name Délire d’interprétation de Sérieux et Capgras.
Capgras Delusion • Delusion-a belief held with strong conviction despite superior evidence to the contrary. • Not a hallucination
Primary Delusion • People think family and friends are replaced by an imposter. • Some cases are more extreme than others
Secondary Delusions • Sometimes it’s not just a loved one. • Pets • Objects • Even yourself
Causes • Stroke • Drug overdose • Cerebral lesions caused by head injury
Interesting facts • Doctors have to rule out 8 different diseases before being able to think about diagnosing you with capgras syndrome. • The person may only think one person or object is replaced and everything else about them is normal
Interesting facts • When people with this disease think someone is an imposter, the two most common things they think they are being replaced with are aliens and robots. • a 42 year old woman was thinking of her mother as an alien. She had no previous head injury and it took extensive amounts of studying and surgery to find out what was the cause.
