  1. Lent and Holy Week By Katherine Powers

  2. The Gift of Forgiveness • Jesus knew we would need forgiveness • When we sin our relationship with God is weakened • The sacrament known as reconciliation (penance) gives us forgiveness from God • We are reconciled when we confess our sins and we are brought back to the Church and God • We need to feel sorry for our sins to be forgiven by a priest • This sacrament can be called conversion or being changed

  3. Penance heals us from guilt and sin • Priests will give us penance to help avoid sin in the future • The six weeks before Easter (Lent) we are asked to repent our sins

  4. Seeking God's Mercy • Lent is a time of penance and conversion • We are called to repent our sins and turn back to God • Reconciliation is Jesus’ special gift to the Church

  5. Lent is a Time of Preparation • People used numbers as symbols • Jewish people use the number “forty” to represent a long period of time • 40 is important in both Testaments • Exodus says the Israelites wondered for 40 years before finding the promised land • There faith had strengthened after this • Jesus prayed, fasted, and avoided temptation in the desert for 40 days

  6. When Jesus returned home he was changed • Lent prepares us for Easter • During Lent the Scripture readings have the number 40 in them

  7. Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind • Jesus confronts a man born blind • Jesus spits in the dirt and rubs the mud on the mans eyes • The man washed in the Pool of Siloam • The man could see • This happened on the Sabbath so people took the man to the Pharisees • The man told the Pharisees the man who healed him was a prophet

  8. Laetare Sunday (rose Sunday) • 4th Sunday in Lent (1/2 way over) • Means “rejoice” • The priests wear pink • The Pope blesses the Golden Rose • The Golden Rose is a thanks from the Pope to a very holy person • In some countries it is known as mothering Sunday. A day to spend with family • We grow more aware of Eater

  9. Celebrating Our Salvation • Holy week is the center of our lives as Christians • God sent his son to die on the cross • This is the belief at the heat of Christianity A Walk Through Holy Week • During Holy week we remember the passion, Death, and resurrection of Jesus

  10. Passion Sunday Most Catholics refer to this day as Palm Sunday. On Palm Sunday we recall Jesus` entry to Jerusalem by waving palm branches and singing “Hosanna”. (pg 342)

  11. Holy Thursday Holy Thursday evening is when we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. On the night before He died, Jesus gave us the gift of Himself in the Eucharist. (pg 342)

  12. Good Friday The day we recall Jesus’ suffering and Death on the cross is called “good” not because Jesus suffered and died, but because his suffering and Death brought about God’s gift of resurrection and new life. (pg 342)

  13. Holy Saturday The morning and afternoon of this day in Holy Week is filled with silence and waiting. We recall Jesus’ time spent in the tomb and God’s promise of resurrection. The evening of the Easter Vigil is considered the holiest night of the year. At the Easter Vigil Mass, we praise and thank God for raising Jesus from the dead to a new life. It is also a time when we welcome new members into the church. (pg 342)

  14. Tre Ore On good Friday Catholics spend between the hours of noon and 3 praying and remembering Jesus. A priest in Peru thought we should remember the last 7 statements by Jesus. • “Father, forgive them they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34) • To Mary “Women, behold, your son” To His disciple “Behold, your mother” (John 19:26-27) • “I thirst” (John 19:28) • “Today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43) • “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34) • “It is finished” (John 19:30) • “Father, into your hand I commend my sprit” (Luke 23:46)
