Who is a Designer? • Designers can be individuals or organisations who carry out design work for a construction project. They may include architects, consulting engineers, quantity surveyors, chartered surveyors, technicians, specifiers and specialist contractors. • The term ‘design’ includes: drawings, design details, specifications and bills of quantity. www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk
The Designer • Designers play a key role in construction projects. • They can often eliminate or reduce risks from the outset so that contractors do not have to manage them on site. www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk
The Designer’s Key Duties • The designer’s key duties are, as far as reasonably practicable to: • Alert clients to their duties under the CDM Regulations • Consider during the design stage the hazards and risks which may arise to those constructing, maintaining or repairing the structure as well as those who might be affected by this work, e.g. the public www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk
The Designer’s Key Duties • Design to avoid risks to health and safety • Reduce any risks at source if they cannot be avoided • Give priority to health and safety measures that will protect ALL of the people on site if the risks cannot be avoided or reduced • Ensure the design (drawings or specifications etc) includes adequate information on health and safety issues that may affect anyone working on the project, i.e. hazardous materials www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk
The Designer’s Key Duties • Supply the Planning Supervisor with any information that is needed or should be included in the health and safety plan • Ensure this information is given on drawings or specifications, etc. • Co-operate with the Planning Supervisor and any other designers, where necessary, to enable all parties to comply with the Regulations. www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk
