Your task • Study the account of Charles I’s death from eyewitness accounts. • Watch the clip from the film ‘Cromwell’ made in 1970. or ‘To Kill a King’ (2002) • What are the strengths and weaknesses of each account? Which would be better for teaching students about how Charles I died?
Your task – Causes of Civil War Charles I, 1625-49 • Read the section on the causes of the Civil War from, ‘Renaissance, Revolution & Reformation’. Write 3 headings in your notes and find evidence for each category: • Religion • Money • Power • What do you think was the most important cause? • Other causes?
Your task Let’s put Charles on trial again! One half of the class is a lawyer for the defence the other for the prosecution. Write a short, opening speech setting out the reasons why / why not Charles was to blame for the Civil War. Read your speech to an opposing lawyer and ask them to assess it against these success criteria ….

Extension task • Find out how the Civil War affected either Folkestone, Hythe or Dover. Is there any evidence locally of the War today?
