Englishsurnames developed in the late Middle Ages and, apart from patronymics(源于父名的姓和名字)(Adams, Jefferson, Jackson, Harrison), have a variety of origins; they come from places (Lincoln, Garfield, Cleveland), from trades (Tyler, Taylor), from personal traits(特性)(Stout, Black), and from the calendar (Noël, May). The Chinese have had surnames long before the period of the Three Emperors and Five Kings (三皇五帝). All members in a Chinese family have the same last name (surname, family name). Children all bear the same last name as their parents.
