The Battle Begins • At 4:30 AM the Federal Arsenal was fired upon. • Charleston, South Carolina • The surrounding batteries fired upon Sumter. • Union did not return fire until 7:30 AM • Firing continued through April 13th.
Surrender of Sumter • After 34 hours of fighting, the Union surrendered the fort to the Confederates. • From 1861 to 1865, the Confederates at Fort Sumter withstood a 22 month siege by Union forces. • During this time, most of the fort was reduced to brick rubble.

Significance of the Battle of Sumter • First battle of Civil War. • No casualties on either side raised false hopes for a quick war. • General Beauregard was a student of Major Anderson while at Westpoint.
Unfortunate Deaths • As the Union was leaving the Fort, they fired a cannon salute. • A cannon exploded killing one man and mortally wounding another.
Recapture of Fort Sumter • At the end of the war, the Union eventually retook the fort and Anderson was able to fly the flag of the United States over the fort once again.
