Standard Operating Procedure Workshop January 31, 2019 1:00 – 3:00 pm Noyes 165
Workshop Goals • The purpose of SOPs and their requirements • Discuss procedures that should have SOPs and how to create them effectively/efficiently • Hazard identification and risk assessment • Create a new SOP! Or update an existing one (Optional) Note: This is not an all encompassing presentation. It is designed to give you the knowledge and resources necessary for you to create effective SOPs efficiently. Please interrupt with questions/comments throughout!
SOP Purpose • “Carry out operations correctly and always in the same manner” • Primary means to inform/educate personnel about hazards in their work place • Some SOPs are required • What SOPs help with • Improve efficiency • Increase quality • Ensure safety • Take a step back and evaluate procedure • Think of What If’s? • Recognize ALL hazards
What Could have SOPs? • All materials and procedures that pose a potential risk to the health and safety of laboratory personnel. • In general, any chemical/process that personnel is trained on
Creating SOPs Efficiently • Create an effective SOP – more than just ‘checking the box’ • You should have extensive knowledge on the process • Why take the time to create SOPs? • It should not be a time consuming process • You are already recording all the necessary pieces!!!– i.e. your notebook • Not necessary to always start from scratch • Make use of templates or SOPs already on the web • Continually update/revise SOPs
SOP Basic Requirements • Scope/Synopsis • Hazard Identification/Risk Assessment Summary • Procedure/Techniques • Disposal and Cleanup (others possible) • Emergency Response • Training Documentation – Not covered in this workshop Find/create a template that best works for you/your lab! https://www.drs.illinois.edu/Programs/StandardOperatingProcedures
Hazard Identification/Risk Assessment • What this includes: • Risk Assessment • Relevant references • MSDS, internet links are acceptable • Summary of hazardous materials • A table works well • Summary of hazardous conditions • Extreme temps, elevated pressure, aerosolization of infectious agents • Engineering controls • Fume hood, biological safety cabinet • Technique hazards • Weighing air reactive solids, warming up cryogens, transferring pyrophoric liquids • PPE
Hazard Identification/Risk Assessment Titration of n-BuLi High Watt Laser
Scope/Synopsis • What this includes: • Summary of the applicability of purpose of the SOP • Short description of the goal of the SOP • Any limits to the procedure • Relation to previous SOPs • This section should be kept to a short paragraph
Scope/Synopsis Titration of n-BuLi High Watt Laser
Procedures/Techniques • What this includes: • Step-by-step procedure • Use significant detail • Process • Detailed description of procedure, all shutdown procedures once experiment is finished • Hazardous material • How to transfer material, incompatibilities, waste, etc • Hazardous class of materials • More general procedure, all hazards addressed • Equipment • Step-by-step operation, details for equipment failure
Procedures/Techniques Titration of n-BuLi High Watt Laser
Disposal and Cleanup • What this includes: • Detailed disposal guidelines • Collecting, storing, disposing of all waste • Container types, labeling • Segregation and required treatments prior to disposal • Waste compatibility • Quench techniques • Shut down procedures (equipment and/or experiments)
Disposal and Cleanup Titration of n-BuLi High Watt Laser
Emergency Response • What this includes: • Any emergency response procedures that are different or in addition to emergency response outlined in Lab Safety Guide • Emergency shutdown procedures for equipment/experiments
Emergency Response Titration of n-BuLi High Watt Laser
Additional Information • What this includes: • Quick tips • Scale ups with this chemical may result in an exotherm. Have ice bath ready • Centrifuge secondary containment is necessary for this process • Dry solvents are absolutely necessary for this process • Weighing out this solid on humid days resulted in quick decomposition of the material • A list of things to never do when working with a hazard • Checklist • Could include entire new section • Maintenance • Be sure that information included in this section should not be elsewhere in the SOP
SOP Format/Template • Find what works well for you/your group • When using SOP template from internet be sure to add/modify to comply with UIUC requirements • https://www.drs.illinois.edu/Programs/StandardOperatingProcedures • http://safetynet.web.unc.edu/home/sops/ • https://www.safety.duke.edu/laboratory-safety/chemical-hygiene/chemical-sops • https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/about/governance/committees/chemicalsafety/hazard-assessment/ways-to-conduct-hazard-assessment/standard-operating-procedure.html • https://essr.umd.edu/research-safety/general-laboratory-chemical-safety/chemical-hygiene-plan/standard-operating
